Truth or Beard by Penny Reid

Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!
Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level-headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life. His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…

But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica’s muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Wraiths.
Certainly, Beau’s magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-head heart is she willing to risk?

Amanda's Review:

Whenever I add a new Penny Reid book to my kindle I just know that when I read it, it will be impossible for me not to laugh or fall in love whilst reading. Plus let's face it her books have some pretty darn awesome descriptions too. Truth or Beard from the very beginning had me hooked and wanting more, especially since the first quote of the book was from another favourite author of mine. The quote then lead into the first person narrative of a sexy Gandalf costume wearing character who not only had rather entertaining perspective but was also immediately likeable.

Jessica James has been off at college and has just returned to her hometown to become a teacher in the local area, however she has big plans for her future ones that don't include her hanging around forever, she wants to explore the world and see all it has to offer. This plan of hers is a little different though to what one of the very handsome Winston brothers had hoped for, considering he had fallen for Jessica James some years ago and was now wanting to court her and if they were suited just like he thought they were, then eventually settle down with her.

The introduction to the relationship between the two main characters gives a sense that they don't seem to like each other very much, but after a few brief run ins it is impossible to ignore the charged chemistry between the two. Soon they are having trouble keeping the other off their mind and are often finding themselves in situations reminiscing about the past, whilst also trying to learn more about who they are  today.

Jessica is this great say it all out loud character, who knows what she wants from life and is determined to go after it. She has a very admirable spirit and there are not many things I could fault about her character, except for in some moments where I wish she had seen a little further beyond her own thoughts.

The Winston Brothers, Dear good Lord! They are all handsome, handy and kinda sorta just really darn hilarious, each of them is also different from their brothers and have traits that make them loveable in their own right. Daune is the type to not say much, but when he does it is honest and straight to the point, when he wants something he is determined to get it and if that doesn't make him hot enough, he is also clever as well. Though maybe not as clever as his brother Cletus who often had me laughing out loud with his commentary on things, he is definitely a character that is both quirky and unique.

We learnt a little bit about all of the six brothers in truth or beard and a tiny bit more about their sister (who has her own book in the knitting in the City series)  enough so that I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series, once released, to learn more about each of the men. The characters of this story were the type to make me wish they were real, because they would be some awesomely loyal, comical and mischievous friends to have around. Definitely another series I'll be keeping my eye out for.

5/5 ❤️s
