The Song of David by Amy Harmon

She said I was like a song. Her favorite song. A song isn’t something you can see. It’s something you feel, something you move to, something that disappears after the last note is played.

I won my first fight when I was eleven years old, and I’ve been throwing punches ever since. Fighting is the purest, truest, most elemental thing there is. Some people describe heaven as a sea of unending white. Where choirs sing and loved ones await. But for me, heaven was something else. It sounded like the bell at the beginning of a round, it tasted like adrenaline, it burned like sweat in my eyes and fire in my belly. It looked like the blur of screaming crowds and an opponent who wanted my blood.

For me, heaven was the octagon.

Until I met Millie, and heaven became something different. I became something different. I knew I loved her when I watched her stand perfectly still in the middle of a crowded room, people swarming, buzzing, slipping around her, her straight dancer’s posture unyielding, her chin high, her hands loose at her sides. No one seemed to see her at all, except for the few who squeezed past her, tossing exasperated looks at her unsmiling face. When they realized she wasn’t normal, they hurried away. Why was it that no one saw her, yet she was the first thing I saw?

If heaven was the octagon, then she was my angel at the center of it all, the girl with the power to take me down and lift me up again. The girl I wanted to fight for, the girl I wanted to claim. The girl who taught me that sometimes the biggest heroes go unsung and the most important battles are the ones we don’t think we can win.

**This is David ‘Tag’ Taggert's book, a supporting character introduced in The Law of Moses. This is a stand-alone story.

Review:

One of the things I love most about Amy Harmons books is that every single character is each uniquely their own, they don't follow a stereotype and they live their lives with expressive emotion, allowing other characters and readers more insight into their personalities. We are introduced to someone once fictional brought to life and we get to follow along on a journey, learning their strengths and weaknesses in some of their most defining moments. Not only do the characters have very distinctive personalities in books by Amy Harmon, but the storylines and the way in which they are told are extraordinary. Every word has purpose and each page is captivating. The Song of David is no exception to the literary brilliance that Harmon has created in her other works.

Tags story, told from very interesting perspectives, instantly drew me in and the world around me became still, the only sights and sounds were the ones created within the pages. Looking through the eyes of Tags friends I saw a man made up of a kind and thoughtful heart and a sharp and curious mind, both of which he used often to try and make the most out of life and to do all that he could to protect those that he loves. Though he does have his faults, to me he is still absolute perfection, especially when it comes to the way in which he cares for Millie and Henry.

Millie and Henry are two more characters that are easy to fall in love with. Their energy and passion for the things they enjoy in life is so infectious, that they made it impossible not to smile with every good moment they had. This book is just made up of so many beautiful characters that I felt my heart expanding, feeling my emotions impacted by each of theirs.

I also felt my heart expand greatly with love of the descriptions in this book, everyday things that people sometimes take for granted, were described in such a way that it just made me want to study all of the moments in the day and see the beauty in everything that came along with it. I can not fault the Song of David in anyway, it is a book that brought tears to my eyes with both sadness and joy and it is a story that will stay with me for a very long time and I know that I will reread it many more times in the future.
5/5 <3 's
I'm not going to recommend that you add only the Song of David to your TBR lists but all of Amy Harmon's published works, they are all amongst my favourite reads.
